When Leadership Looks Like Trust Instead of Control

There are moments in life when leadership doesn’t look like strength. It looks like stillness.

It looks like sitting in a waiting room, trying to keep your breathing steady while your thoughts race ahead of you. It looks like turning your phone face down, not because you don’t care about the outside world, but because the only thing that matters in that moment is sitting a few feet away.

A few weeks ago, I found myself in one of those moments. My son was having eye surgery. He was scared. I was scared. And for the first time in a long time, there was absolutely nothing I could do to control the outcome.

That’s usually where the real lessons show up.

When Leadership Loses Control

I’ve spent years talking about discipline, standards, and responsibility. Those ideas shape how I run my business, how I lead, and how I coach. I believe deeply in showing up, doing the work, and carrying weight even when nobody is watching.

But moments like this strip leadership down to something simpler.

There was no plan to execute. No angle to optimize. No effort that could change the timing.

Just trust.

Trust in doctors who had done this countless times before. Trust in preparation I couldn’t see. Trust in God, even when every instinct in me wanted certainty instead of faith.

Over the years, I’ve learned that freedom rarely comes first. Responsibility does. Sometimes that responsibility shows up in business. Sometimes it shows up at home. Sitting there, waiting, I was reminded again that the weight comes before the reward.

The Quiet Version of Faith

Faith isn’t always loud. It doesn’t always come with clarity or confidence. Sometimes it’s quiet obedience. Sometimes it’s choosing not to spiral when the outcome is completely out of your hands.

I didn’t feel strong that day. I didn’t feel particularly spiritual. I didn’t feel like a leader.

I felt human.

Leadership culture often celebrates decisiveness and certainty, but real leadership includes the ability to stay grounded when answers aren’t available.

It reminded me why I’ve had to learn, again and again, to live by faith over feelings. Not the inspirational version. The real one, where you keep showing up without emotional reinforcement.

Watching Someone Else Be Brave

What caught me off guard was how my son handled it.

He didn’t ask many questions. He didn’t fight it. He trusted us. He trusted the doctors. He trusted that the adults in the room had his back.

Watching him try to be brave, I realized he’s still my little big leaguer, even without a field, a dugout, or a uniform.

That’s leadership influence in its purest form. Not authority. Not explanations. Just trust built quietly over time.

Coaching has taught me that kids watch far more than they listen. They remember how you respond when things don’t go your way. They remember how you act when effort doesn’t immediately show up on the scoreboard.

The Work That Happens Out of Sight

Leadership always leaks. In moments like this, your kids, your team, and your family learn who you really are.

It might sound strange to draw business lessons from a hospital waiting room, but that’s where some of the clearest ones live.

You can do everything right and still wait. You can prepare and still feel helpless. You can carry responsibility quietly and realize that nobody sees the work while it’s happening.

Those are the moments that test whether your leadership is rooted in outcomes or in identity.

Choosing Trust Without Checking Out

There’s a difference between surrender and disengagement.

Surrender says, “I’ve done my part. Now I trust.” Disengagement says, “I’m done caring.”

Leadership requires the first and rejects the second.

Trusting God didn’t mean I stopped caring. It meant I accepted the limits of my control. That distinction matters in business, parenting, and faith.

If you try to carry everything yourself, you eventually break. If you avoid responsibility altogether, you never grow. The balance is learning when to act and when to release.

The Question That Stays

I’ve shared pieces of my leadership journey publicly before, but what matters most are the moments no one writes about.

The quiet ones. The uncertain ones. The ones where leadership doesn’t perform. It simply endures.

Here’s a question worth sitting with.

If your ability to lead disappeared tomorrow, would people still trust you?

Not because of your title. Not because of your platform. Not because of your results.

But because of who you’ve consistently been.

My son came out of surgery just fine. Relief followed quickly by gratitude.

But the lesson stayed.

Leadership isn’t proven when things go right. It’s revealed when you can’t control the outcome and choose trust anyway.

Those moments shape you. Quietly. Permanently.
