Introduction
There are two life-changing principles I want to share with you today. If you take them to heart and apply them consistently, they have the power to transform your life in ways you can’t even imagine.
And I don’t say that lightly.
This isn’t coming from theory, privilege, or a self-help cliché. I didn’t start with a trust fund or a silver spoon. I’ve been at the bottom. I’ve been broke, homeless, and living in a car for three years. I’ve lost everything—twice.
So when I tell you this works, it’s because I’ve lived it.
This message is for people of faith. You don’t have to be a theologian, but you must believe in God—because everything I’m about to share is rooted in Him.
Let’s dive in.
Principle #1: You Have Not Because You Ask Not
This one scripture completely changed my life:
“You have not because you ask not.” — James 4:2
Do you realize how powerful those words are? Most people don’t live the life of their dreams because they never ask God for it. Instead, they try to figure it out on their own, relying on their own limited strength.
But let me ask you—how’s that been working out?
I know the struggle because I lived it. For 30 years, I tried to do everything myself. I pushed, hustled, and fought in my own power until I finally realized God had already given me a simple blueprint for breakthrough: Ask Him.
Here’s the truth: you are God’s child. He created you with purpose and intention. He is waiting for you to come to Him — not with small, safe prayers, but with bold, faith-filled ones.
Because here’s the key: if you up your ask, He will up His give.
Why Asking Works — Spiritually and Scientifically
This principle isn’t just spiritual; it’s also backed by psychology. Studies on the “law of expectancy” show that people who set higher goals and clearly verbalize them achieve significantly more than those who don’t (Harvard Business Review).
Prayer aligns your faith with action. Asking God boldly isn’t entitlement — it’s obedience. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
If you’re not asking, you’re limiting what God can release in your life.
Principle #2: Write the Vision and Make It Plain
The second reason people don’t live the life they want? They never write it down.
Habakkuk 2:2 gives us the roadmap:
“Write the vision and make it plain so that he who reads it may run with it. For the vision awaits an appointed time; though it linger, wait for it—it will certainly come and will not delay.”
Every successful person I’ve ever known or studied follows this principle. They write their goals down. They create vision boards. They make their dreams visible.
Why? Because when you write your vision, you give your faith a target. You give God something specific to bless.
The Psychology of Writing Your Goals
Secular research backs this up. A landmark study by Dr. Gail Matthews at Dominican University found that people who wrote down their goals were 42% more likely to achieve them than those who didn’t (Dominican University Study).
When you write your goals, you activate the reticular activating system (RAS) in your brain — a filter that helps you notice opportunities aligned with your vision (Psychology Today).
God gave us this principle long before science “discovered” it. Write it down. Make it plain. Believe it. Run with it.
The Life-Changing Challenge: Write Your 300 List
Here’s the practical step I challenge you to take today:
Write down 300 things you want God to do for you.
Be specific.
- Don’t just write “more money.” Write: “I want to earn $150,000 a year through my business.”
- Don’t just write “travel more.” Write: “I want to visit Italy and Greece with my family in the next 3 years.”
Write everything:
- The car you want (make, model, color)
- The home you dream of
- The savings you want in the bank
- The vacations you’ll take
- The legacy you’ll leave for your family
- The lives you want to impact through generosity
At first, you’ll breeze through 50–75 items. Then your brain will lock up. That’s when the real growth begins. Push past the mental block. Stretch your imagination. Dream bigger.
Step 2: Read It Daily
Once you’ve written your 300, read your list every morning and every night. Pray over it. Speak life into it. Expect God to move.
One year from today, pull out your list and check off everything God has done. Most people see at least 10% of their list come to pass in the first year alone.
And when you see that happen, your faith skyrockets. You’ll never go back to small thinking again.
Why This Works
When you write your vision, you’re not just journaling — you’re making a covenant with God. You’re sending a signal of belief. You’re aligning faith with action.
And faith, Scripture tells us, is what moves mountains (Matthew 17:20).
I’ve seen this in my own life. I’ve had to build new vision boards because so many of the things I once prayed for and believed for have already come to pass.
The principles are simple:
- You have not because you ask not.
- Write the vision and make it plain.
If you apply these, they will change everything.
Your Next Step
Start today. Don’t wait until tomorrow. Take out a piece of paper and begin writing your 300 list.
Read it daily. Pray over it daily. Believe for it daily.
If you commit to this, one year from now your life won’t even look the same.
God keeps all His promises. Trust Him. Ask boldly. Write faithfully. Move expectantly.
Final Encouragement
I’ve lived these principles. From sleeping in a car to leading businesses, coaching young athletes, and building a life of impact with my family, I’ve seen God’s faithfulness again and again.
Your breakthrough is waiting. It starts with bold prayer and a written vision.
